Commander Don

I was saved while in college in 1976. Many years later when I was married we moved to Aurora, which was about 20 years ago.

After attending Central Bible Church for two or three years I was asked to be a leader in the junior high program of Awana. I helped out as a leader for again maybe two or three years and then asked to be the commander. I have been serving as the commander ever since.

So you ask what does a commander do?

Our Awana club is made up of six different groups or clubs ranging from kindergarten all the way through high school. Each club has it's own leaders and the commander makes sure that all the positions are filled.

The commander also oversees the budget which is about $3,500.

Every May is our Awards Night which has to be set up and the program made out. The awards need to be organized so each child gets the correct award and finally light refreshments are usually offered and then has to be organized also.

The best part of being commander is that I get to interact with not only all the leaders but also the parents and their children.

Once in awhile my hair and beard get dyed about six different colors as a reward for meeting certain goals.

For me the best part of this position is being able to encourage and challenge the children to complete their books and memorize the Bible verses.
